son used ordinary dish soap in dishwasher

by maxine finch
(surrey, b.c., canada)

Our dishwasher will not work at all now after our son accidentally put in ordinary dishwashing soap in the dishwasher.
Any ideas on what we should do???

Answer

Hi Maxine,

Typically this will not cause the dishwasher not to run at all. What happens is it will fill with suds and leak into the floor. When this happens the best way to get rid of the suds is to run cycles with plain white vinegar in the dishwasher until the suds are gone.

You can also manually fill the dishwasher with cold water then let it wash until it pumps then fill it with cold water again until the suds are gone.

If it will not run at all you will have to give me the model number and brand for me to try to help you.

Thank you,
Shawn/administrator

We did all that and the machine runs, but, no water comes through to wash the dishes. We have a Kenmore dishwasher.

Assuming you are getting enough water to the dishwasher the first thing to check is the wash arm. Make sure it isn’t clogged with food particles or anything else that may be causing water not to flow. I sill needs the model number to help.
