How Do I Separate Inner Door From Outer Door

by Doug

I have an O'Keefe & Merritt dishwasher from about 1986. It looks similar to the dishwasher pictures on your web site, particularly the detergent dispenser that is not working.

When I unscrewed the inner door from the outer door, I could only pull the inner door out about an inch, because there is a lever connected to the inner door that goes thru a slot in the control section on the top of the outer door. The handle on the lever won't fit thru the slot.

How can I get the inner door separated from the outer door? I can't see how to remove the control section on the top of the outer door (assuming that an amateur like me should even attempt that).

Hi Doug,

I am not at all familiar with that brand. If you gave me the model number I could look it up to see.

What you describe to me seems like it is the door latch lever that is causing your problem. If this is the case there should be a little plastic knob on the end of the door latch that should come off to allow the lever to slip though the slot in the door.

Thank you,

Your instructions on how to get the knob off the door lever worked - thank you. By the way, it turned out I have a Tappan 61 1144 dishwasher from about 1986. When I looked at the apparatus between the outer and inner door, it looked like your photo of the GE Dishwasher Detergent Dispenser/Round Style. There was a spring around the axle of the trigger on the inner door that appears to be working properly. Apparently that trigger is supposed to be activated by a handle in a plastic box on the outer door. But I was not able to get the plastic box on the outer door off; it is held on by a plastic tab which wouldn't pull out. There is an inch and a quarter long piece of apparently broken plastic hanging out of the bottom of the outer door plastic box. So unless there is a way to get that box off without breaking it, we will probably have to get a new dishwasher.

Again this is not a model I am familiar with at all. But I was able to look the model up and I believe I found the box you are referring to and it appears that you remove it by twisting it a quarter of turn then it will pull off. I hope this helps!
