dryer not heating

whirlpool electric model # lec8858eq1 dryer. Checked lint hose to wall clean. Can't get into wall of Apt so don't know where it leads or how long it is. Dryer worked fine for the three months I've had it until now .Will dryer run heat if vent is off the dryer? Do you need wet clothes in dryer to work?

Yes, it will heat with the vent off and it will heat with the vent clogged. It just will not dry the clothes if the vent is clogged and it isn’t safe to run it with a clogged vent. If it will not heat at all then the vent isn’t a major concern. But after the repair you need to make sure the vent working (not clogged), by finding the vent outlet and seeing if it blows when the dryer is running.

There are three things that will typically cause this problem and they are the two high-limit switches and the heater. Disconnect the dryer and access the heater by removing the back of the dryer. Once off you should see the heater on the right hand side.

Disconnect the wires off the heater and use an ohmmeter to test for continuity between the two terminals. If it has continuity the heater is not broken but it may be grounded. Test from one of the terminals to ground and if there is any continuity the heater is grounded. If the heater is open (as indicated by the first test) or grounded replace the heater and if not proceed.

Next check the hi-limit thermostat switches. Disconnect the wires from the switches and test for continuity across each switch and if one is bad replace them both (they are sold as a kit).
