refrigerator not coming on

by jack oconnor
(detroit, mi)

My refrigerator has been unplugged for 3 weeks, the interior light is on but the refrigerator will not turn on.

Hi Jack,

It may be the compressor start relay. Do you hear any clicks coming from the back of the refrigerator? If so disconnect the power from the refrigerator and remove the cover off the compressor so that you can access the compressor. On the side of the compressor there should a cover remove it and you should see the start relay. Shake the relay and if it rattles replace it.

Unfortunately I will need more information if this doesn’t help.

Please leave a comment telling me the model number and brand.

Thank you.

Thanks for your reply.
This is a GE Model: TBX21CIXFRWW
Serial: TR508317
This fridge is in a house I just purchased and was working when I looked at the house. When we plugged it in it did come on for a while and we could smell a slight burning smell. At this point the compressor would not come on. I unplugged it for an hour and tried again. It still would not start. The interior light is on.
I checked for the coompressor start up and it did not rattle. Any other suggestions, or is there another way to test this part. I know this fridge is a 1996, but appears to be in good condition. May it be stuck in defrost mode?

It could be stuck in defrost, the defrost timer is located in the back of the fresh food section. There should be a small white round plug that you can remove. Once you remove it you can turn the timer with a screwdriver clockwise. Turn it a little bit and if the compressor kicks on replace the timer.

Try turning the cold control (fresh food temperature control) all the way up. Tap on that control lightly and if the compressor comes on then the cold control may be bad.

Look for any burnt wires, the burning smell may be coming from a burnt wire or it may not mean anything.

There isn’t any other way to check the start relay but a bad start relay will almost always rattle.

Another thing check to see if the coils under the refrigerator are clean. If the coils are dirty the compressor will run but will cut off right away, before the refrigerator gets a chance to cool. Hope this helps!

The refrigerator was stuck in defrost mode. I will monitor to see if it needs replacing.
