Noisy Icemaker - No Ice

by Mike R
(SC)

My Whirlpool Side-by-side icemaker stopped working. (ED2SHAXMB10). The night that it stopped, I kept hearing a a soft grinding type noise that I finally traced to the icemaker. I immediately turned it off and the noise stopped. Would this indicate a heater or thermostat problem? Or what is the next step for troubleshooting?

Thanks

Answer

Hi Mike,

Replacement parts in WHIRLPOOL ED2SHAXMB10 Refrigerator

The motor/modular will commonly cause this type of problem. A lot of times the gear in the center of the motor modular will come loose and you will continually hear the motor running. The shaft that the gear rides on will be loose or broken. Look in the center of the gear it should look like the picture below but if the shaft is broken replace the motor/modular. Also if the gear will easily pull off replace the motor/modular.

This is the part that I am referring to.

There is a possibility the heater is bad so the motor cannot push the ice out. This will cause the same problem. It is rare for the heater to go bad but the motor/modular commonly goes bad. If you take the motor/modular off you can check the heater with an ohmmeter. There will be two pins that stick into the modular, you can check the heater there.

I hope this helps!

Thank you,
