Ice maker not working. Whirlpool Side by Side Refrigerator

by Gwen
(Mississippi)

Last week my pipes froze and burst under the house. Ever since, my ice maker has not worked. Water comes through the door just fine, but there is no ice from the ice maker.

Answer

Hi Gwen,

What can happen is when the water is off for some time (a day or so) is the tube that enters the back if the refrigerator that feeds water to the icemaker will freeze. This is due to the fact that that the water is off but the icemaker still calls for water. What little bit of water that is in the line tries to come into the icemaker but freezes before it gets through the tube. The same thing happens again and again and eventually the tube gets completely clogged with ice.

Pull the tube out of the back of the refrigerator and clean it out with hot water. Then reinstall it.

To prevent this always turn the icemaker off when the water is off. I am sure the icemaker was the least of your worries when the pipes are frozen but turning the icemaker off would have prevented this.

If you clean the ice out and it freezes up again replace the water valve.

If the line isn’t frozen post a comment and we will go from there.
