ice maker dripping

Hi Shawn,

I'm back with my original problem however perhaps a bit smarter for it. My original problem was a drip from the icemaker. The ice maker model is whirlpool 1016069 that I believe has been replaced by 2198597. The drip appears to be coming from the plastic tray that is attached to the bottom of the icemaker. I believe what is happening is that a small amount of water goes into this tray. Over time there is a build up of ice. Then when the water leaks in it drips through the holes in the bottom of the tray. Any Thoughts?

Again Thank you very much for your help

Answer

Hi Neil,

There are a few things that will cause this.

One is that it overflows just a little during fill. Most likely it is a bad water valve that will cause this. The motor/modular can cause this but typically it is the water valve.

Sometimes the icemaker will leak into the head of the icemaker and then leak out onto the tray you are talking about. If this is the case the head of the icemaker will fill with ice. If you remove the icemaker and take the front cover off the icemaker you should be able to tell if this is happing or not. I recommend replacing the entire icemaker if this is the case.

If a piece of ice is in the little cup that water enters the icemaker a drop or two of water may shoot out of the icemaker. Check for that.

Another thing that is very uncommon but I have seen it a couple of times is that there will be a hole in the bottom of the icemaker. Remove the tray and you should be able to see the hole if this is the problem. I have only seen this two times but it may be more common if you live in an area with hard water. If this is the case you will have to replace the icemaker.I hope this helps!

Thank you,
