Burning Smell and Whining Sound

by Ola Opaleye
(Orange Nj)

My Hav2357aww Maytag washer makes a whining sound and there is also a burning smell during the spin cycle, is this belt or something more expensive.

I also have a broken GE washer wpre6100gowt, It does not agitate, it fills up with water and then later pump the water out without any agitation whatsoever, what could be wrong with it

Hi Ola,

As for the Maytag washer often the pump will get hard to turn causing the belt to were out and you could get a burning smell and a noise. Remove the belt and attempt to turn the pump by hand. If it feels tight replace the pump and the belt. If it doesn’t fell tight you might get by with just the belt.

Maytag Washer Not Running

The GE washer is a GE HydroWave washer. On these washers the motor stores fault codes. Some of these fault codes will cause the motor to slow down or shut down. Also there is a fuse that will cause the same problem. This page explains more about both things

However the problem may be mechanical. The agitator coupling can cause the washer not to agitate. Hold the tub and attempt to turn the agitator by hand. If the agitator will turn freely independent from the tub the agitator coupling is bad. Pull the agitator up and a 7/16 screw just under the agitator holds on the coupling. I hope this helps!!
